Loud cheers filled the amphitheatre at Sydney Showground when the Camden Showgirl, Lauren Elkins was introduced to the two thousand strong crowd at the Presentation Ceremony, for the 2009 Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition.
MC and radio announcer Murray Wilton, asked if Lauren had bought her own fan club with her, the enthusiasm was so strong for the 22 year old Camden trainee Stock and Station Agent.
Fifteen finalists from over six hundred entrants across New South Wales were selected to come to Sydney Royal for the climax of the competition which has been running for forty seven years.
Lauren had joined the other state finalists at Sydney Royal four days before the announcement was made. Under the watchful eye of three judges, the finalists visited Government House for a reception with the New South Wales Governor, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, had several formal lunches, dinners and speaking engagements and visited the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Finally the judges decisions was announced and Lauren placed third to second place getter Katrina Nicholas from Nimmitabel and the title of New South Wales Showgirl went to Kimbalee Morris of Connabarrabran.
The Camden Show Society President Mr David Head said the result was an outstanding one for Lauren and he knew all of Camden would be proud of this hard working young woman.
Mr Head said that it is very hard for Camden Showgirls to be successful at this level of competition as Camden is becoming increasingly recognised as part of the Sydney Metropolitan area then as a rural community. Lauren’s endeavours to highlight the agricultural significance of the area and the district’s strong rural character and values were obviously recognised by the judges.
Lauren thanked the Camden Show Society Committee for the confidence they had in her and for the encouragement they gave her throughout the competition. She also thanked the Camden community at large for all their well wishes and enthusiasm, this meant a lot especially towards the end of the competition she said. Lauren made a special point of thanking her family and friends for the belief they had in her and their continued support.
